Player of the week honors go to Tom Bean this week who hit a clutch 3 pointer in the closing minute of his game against Haven of Grace to put Calvary Chapel 3 up for good in a close 48 - 45 win.
Calvary Chapel 3 vs. Haven of Grace
Calvary Chapel 3 continues to improve every week and it was no more evident in the great team play they put forth this week. Seven players scored with some crisp ball movement and clutch rebounds.
Haven of Grace is a completely different team with Adam Melvin. Back after missing last weeks game, Melvin scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Tim Beals, who over the last two weeks was able to move around down low consistently, was neutralized by Calvary Chapel 3, only scoring 3 points.
Make no mistake however, as this game went back and forth for the full 40 minutes. With just minutes to go Haven of Grace was up by 2. Some clutch rebounds and a huge 3 pointer from Tom Bean sealed the win for Calvary Chapel, 48 - 45
Community Baptist vs First Baptist
Even without Jeremy Hueston this week Community Baptist was spot on from the outset. Five players combined to hit 9 three pointers and both Jim Cattaneo and Colby DaSilva scored 23 points. Manny Andrade proved to be a nice addition in place of the injured Ben Edwards(ankle) scoring 11 points and grabbing 6 rebounds.
Mike Burke continues to play well for First Baptist scoring 12 points with 6 rebounds. First Baptist improved this week with some better passing but was clearly overmatched by Community Baptist's depth as they lost 83 - 38.
Calvary Chapel 2 vs. Calvary Chapel 1
The score simply does not reflect how close this game was all the way until 7 minutes left in the 2nd half. As the first half began it was clear Calvary Chapel 2 had no one to defend the quickness of John Mohan. Mohan made drive after drive to the basket, creating three 3 point plays and shooting 7 free throws.
Calvary Chapel 2's size and athleticism kept them in the game until late in the second half. With 7 minutes remaining Calvary Chapel 1's lead was only 7. At that point Calvary Chapel 1's well rounded squad exposed Calvary Chapel 2's lack of an outside shooter as they went on a 29-2 run to finish the game.
Mike Cattaneo sustained a cut over his left eye which required 7 stitches after his own teammate caught him and may miss some time for Calvary Chapel 2.
Three weeks in to the season, 3 teams are tied for 2nd place. It appears there could be a good battle for playoff position as the season progresses.
